Something ‘Alive’ From The Past
The hues of the artificial flowers in this household arrangement have remained brilliant and joyful over the years. A teacup sits by the flowers, waiting for someone to reach over and take a sip. Although it seems like it was once a comfortable place to sit and enjoy a cup of tea, the upholstered furniture hasn’t fared as well. “More than any other house I’ve explored, this one felt completely like stepping back in time,” photographer Bryan Sansivero said of the experience.

This might be Marion Carll’s desk. She was born in the farmhouse in 1885 and attended a one-room schoolhouse as a child. Carll went to high school in Jamaica, Queens, before returning to Commack and spending the rest of her career in education. She welcomed students to the farm on a regular basis to learn about local history and agricultural life. In 1957, a Commack elementary school was renamed the Marion E. Carll School. Carll kindly bequeathed the farm to the Commack School District, as we all know.
