They Owned A Historic Sewing School

The Huntington Sewing and Trade School, located near Commack in Huntington, New York, was one of the country’s first vocational schools. It taught young women sewing and housekeeping skills, as well as trades to local young men. Ms. Carll may have been inspired to sew by the school, which was erected in 1905. With the help of philanthropist Doris Buffett, the sister of tycoon Warren Buffett, the structure was refurbished in 2017. The Huntington Historical Society now uses it as an archiving facility.

The Legacy Of Marion Carll

In the early 1960s, the hamlet of Commack was rapidly expanding, and the school named for Ms. Carll was closed. According to the local paper Smithtown Matters, her impact did not end with the school’s closure. Her “legacy was not the Marion Carll School, her legacy was community involvement, commitment to education, love of Commack, its residents, and the Marion Carll Farm,” reports the paper. “It was in this spirit that Marion Carll left her farm and its cherished possessions to the Commack School District.”
